Neuropsychotherapy Basics

Regionally people suggest that it is difficult to find therapy assistance with adults suffering from Aquired Brain Injury or Traumatic Brain Injury. Most specialists at this level seem to be based in larger cities and/or in Sydney NSW.

At the local level, over several years we have been consulting periodically with people who seek out behaviour specialist and psychotherapy assistance for concerns arising from post Aquired Brain Injury and recovery issues. Over time we found that the practice of neuropsychotherapy is a helpful frame of reference because this field draws together relevant disciplines and empirical knowledge towards practical solution-focused and psycho-educational interventions.

Under the NDIS Act 2013, where an individual is assessed as dealing with a functional disability post Aquired Brain Injury, many of these cases may have access to therapeutic help and other supports and resources.

Book Editors Ritva Laaksonen and Mervi Ranta in Introduction to Neuropsychotherapy: Guidelines for Rehabilitation of Neurological and Neuropsychiatric Patients Throughout the Lifespan, suggest that neuropychotherapy is primarily a multidisciplinary field of practice that combines neuropsychological knowledge with recent findings in neuroscience with an emphasis on practical therapeutic outcomes.

The application of neurological-related knowledge to psychotherapy and counselling as well as with person centred behaviour support appears to assist with assessments and treatment planning. These methods appear to assist patients with emotional, social, behavioural, and cognitive issues as well as their carers, families, and staff support.
